TRUTH IN LABELING

Naturally Made Soaps has voluntarily made the 'Truth in Labeling' pledge to meet the Natural Ingredient Resource Centre criteria for labeling natural ingredients and products. When I label my soaps I have to stick to strict guidelines set down by the EU, this often means that the labels are incomprehensible to most people, to make things clearer I am listing the main ingredients I use in my soap and their properties.

AQUA - Water of course! although I do use other liquids such as Goats Milk and Beer

BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII - Shea butter from West Africa, prized for its super moisturising qualities

CERA ALBA - Beeswax

COCOS NUCIFERA - Coconut oil, gives soap its fluffy bubbles and helps it to lather in hard water

ESSENTIAL OILS - Natural fragrant oils obtained from plants, while these are natural ingredients the law dictates that the constituents of essential oils that could potentially cause allergies have to be listed separately on the label if they reach a certain percentage in the soap. To be on the safe side I list all of them in each recipe regardless of whether they reach the percentage or not.

OLEA EUROPEA - Olive oil, a good skin conditioner which makes soap more moisturising

PARFUM - this is not an actual ingredient in itself but it has to be listed immediately before whatever fragrance is used

PRUNUS DULCIS - Sweet almond oil, this is an excellent emolient, known to soften, soothe and condition the skin

RINCINIS COMMUNIS - Castor oil, makes soap really creamy and is a fabulous moisturiser

SODIUM HYDROXIDE - Lye, soap cannot be made without this, it used to be obtained from wood ash and known as potash but is now made using quality methods which ensures it is consistent and easier to predict. Lye is an alkali and when mixed with liquid (usually water) and oils the chemical reaction that results creates soap, there is no Lye left in the soap once this has happened

THEOBROMA CACAO - Cocoa butter which is a superb moisturiser
